Newspaper articles, awards, and a few letters of Ethel L. Payne, reporter and columnist, who served as the Chicago Defender's Washington bureau chief for over 20 years (beginning 1953). The collection includes articles about her career, copies of some articles by her (many on African Americans and race relations from the late 1980s), copies of two letters by Payne to relatives relating her current career and personal news (1981, 1985), "Honor Award for Distinguished Service in Journalism" certificate from the University of Missouri (1991); and a memorial resolution by the Los Angeles City Council in her honor (June 14, 1991).
